Exciting Updates – partners meet in Athens!

The AHOS project recently reached a significant milestone with its Intermediate Meeting held in the vibrant city of Athens. From 16th to 19th January 2024, partners from Italy, Poland, Serbia, Germany and Greece gathered to engage in insightful discussions and collaborative sessions aimed at advancing inmate rehabilitation through theater. Hosted at Fabrica Athens Artspace, the meeting provided an ideal setting for productive exchanges and strategic planning.

The agenda was packed with activities designed to maximize collaboration and progress within the project’s work packages. The first day commenced with partners coming together for a warm welcome dinner, setting the tone for the days ahead. Subsequent sessions delved into various aspects of project management, including communication tools, interim report, and coordination with prison staff and inmates.

One of the highlights of the meeting was an immersive theater experience featuring the Greek partner’s theater director Stathis Grapsas’ rehearsal with former inmates. This powerful demonstration underscored the transformative potential of the arts in the rehabilitation process, reinforcing the project’s core mission. Throughout the discussions, partners shared valuable insights and perspectives, fostering a spirit of mutual learning and collaboration.

The agenda also included in-depth discussions on communication updates, logo finalization, handbook progress, and twinning evaluations. Additionally, sessions focused on training, internships, and performance calendars, ensuring alignment and progress across all work packages. Partners worked tirelessly to address challenges, share best practices, and chart a course for future activities.

A significant highlight of the meeting was a visit to Thebes Prison and its unique Detox centre, offering partners a firsthand glimpse into inmate rehabilitation efforts. This insightful experience provided invaluable insights that will inform the project’s ongoing work. As the meeting concluded, partners departed with a renewed sense of purpose and commitment to advancing inmate rehabilitation through theater.

From our viewpoint AHOS Intermediate Meeting in Athens was a complete success, further solidifying the project’s position as a leader in the field of social innovation and performing arts. With continued dedication and collaboration, the project aims to make a lasting impact on the lives of inmates and contribute to positive societal change.

Exciting Exchanges in Inmate Rehabilitation through Theater

Within the AHOS project and backed by the invaluable support of the Creative Europe Programme, CRI had immense pleasure of taking part in two twinning mobility opportunities, both as guests and as hosts.

Twinning Visit with Fabrica Athens: June 2nd – 5th, 2023

Embarked on a journey of discovery, the CRI Institute engaged in rich dialogues and immersive experiences in inmate rehabilitation. Exploring the Women’s Prison of Thebes, we delved into discussions and witnessed rehearsals, gaining insights into prison education systems. At Fabrica Athens, who were our dedicated and incredible hosts during this twinning, workshops illuminated theater’s transformative power in ex-inmate reintegration, fostering collaboration and innovation in societal challenges. This visit underscored success in knowledge exchange, skill enhancement, and future partnership prospects, epitomizing the potential of theater in rehabilitation.

Twinning Visit with aufBruch GbR: July 12th – 14th, 2023

Venturing into the heart of Belgrade’s prison landscape, CRI hosted aufBruch GbR for an immersive exploration. Visits to the Central Prison and Penitentiary institution unveiled the intricate dynamics of inmate rehabilitation. From intense discussions with prison officials to witnessing award-winning documentaries like “Records from Cell Number 12,” the visit illuminated CRI’s authentic approach to inmate rehabilitation. The exchange sparked mutual learning, highlighting the positive impact of cross-cultural exchanges in enhancing prison programs.

These visits epitomize CRI’s commitment to leveraging theater for societal change and inmate rehabilitation. Through collaboration, innovation, and cross-cultural exchanges, CRI continues to pioneer transformative initiatives in the realm of performing arts and social work.

”Notes from the cell number 12 ” in Mixer House

After the premiere in New York and the promotion of the movie in American prisons, The documentary film ”Notes from the cell number 12 ” will be presented on 18th January at 8pm in the Mixer House!

It is a dramatization of the Dostoyevsky novel ”Notes from the Underground”, made with convicts that are serving prison sentences in the District Prison in Belgrade. The author of the project Marina Kovačević had a premiere of her movie and program of successful rehabilitation through art in Serbian prisons on international conference in New York and after the premiere, visited several US federal prisons, where the film was shown as part of rehabilitation for the American convicts.

Documentary movie “Notes of the cell number 12″ is epilogue of theater performances with Serbian inmates, created in co-production services for the treatment of the Belgrade District Prison and non-governmental organizations ,,Rehabilitation Through imagination”. The play has been performed seventeen times at institutions and in the biggest Serbian prisons to the grand finale, the performance to the public at Belgrade Youth Centre, in September 2015.

“This was the best year of my life. Literally, the only reason it was worth it to be in prison,” said Djordje Vasiljevic, a prisoner in movie “Notes from the cell 12’’.

After the movie, there will be a organized open discussion starting at 8pm with a convict and one of the main actors of the film, Djordje Vasiljevic and author of the film, Marina Kovačević.

Posle premijere u Njujorku i promocije filma u američkim zatvorima, dokumentarni film ”Zapisi iz ćelije broj 12” biće prikazan u Beogradu u galeriji ”Polet” (Cetinjska 15) u sredu 11. januara u 20h. Druga projekcija će biti u Mikser hausu 18. januara u 20h.

Reč je o dramatizaciji dela ”Zapisi iz podzemlja” Dostojevskog, rađenog sa osuđenicima na izdržavanju kazne zatvora u Okružnom zatvoru u Beogradu. Autorka ovog projekta Marina Kovačević, premijerno je prikazala film i program rehabilitacije kroz umetnost na međunarodnoj konferenciji u Njujorku, a posle premijere je posetila nekoliko američkih federalnih zatvora gde se film prikazuje kao deo rehabilitacije za američke osuđenike.
Dokumentarni film “Zapisi iz ćelije broj 12″ epilog je pozorišne predstave nastale u koprodukciji Službe za tretman Okružnog zatvora u Beogradu i nevladine organizacije ,,Centar za rehabilitaciju imaginacijom”. Predstava je izvedena sedamnaest puta u matičnoj ustanovi i u najvećim srpskim zatvorima uz veliko finale, izvođenje za javnost u Domu omladine Beograda, septembra 2015. godine.

IZJAVA: “Bila je ovo najbolja godina u mom životu. Bukvalno, jedino zbog čega je vredelo biti na robiji”, rekao je osudjenik Đorđe Vasiljević u filmu “Zapisi iz ćelije broj 12”.

Nakon premijere u Njujorku koja je izazvala pažnju prisutnih tokom konferencije “Performing the world”, film “Zapisi iz ćelije br. 12”  kreće na turneju po američkim zatvorima gde je prikazan kao deo rehabilitacije za američke osuđenike. Usledili su pozivi iz federalnih zatvora u Mičigenu, Kenakiju i iz zatvora Sen Kventin u Kaliforniji.
